Average retail pump price of petrol (Premium Motor Spirit, PMS) per litre in Nigeria, in nominal Naira, published monthly by the National Bureau of Statistics in its Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) Price Watch. Prices are surveyed across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory; the national figure and the six geopolitical-zone figures are averages of the surveyed outlets, not sums of the states, and should not be added together. Data run monthly from November 2023 to May 2026. Source: National Bureau of Statistics.

  • Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) Price Watch — average retail price per litre, monthly (state + 6 zones + national), Nov 2024–May 2026, 19 vintages · This data collection exercise was done by over 700 NBS staff in all the states and the FCT. The data was collected from over 10,000 respondents located in sample outlets spread across 774 local government areas in all the 36 states and the FCT, Abuja.

Methodology

The data collection was conducted in sample outlets spread across 774 local government areas in all the 36 states and the FCT, Abuja. The data was collected from over 10,000 respondents located in the outlets. The estimates were derived from the weights generated from household expenditure on fuel and the actual prices households bought those fuels. This data collection exercise was done by over 700 NBS staff in all the states and the FCT and were closely monitored by quality control officers with sophisticated monitoring guidelines. The average prices are reported for each state and the FCT, Abuja accordingly.

The average retail price paid by consumers for Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) in May 2026 was NGN1,596.25, representing a 55.31% increase from May 2025 (NGN1,027.76). Likewise, comparing the average price value with that of the previous month (i.e., April 2026), the average retail price increased by 4.13% from NGN1,532.93. In State profile analysis, Edo State had the highest average retail price for Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol), at NGN1,722.91. Bauchi and Benue States were next, with NGN1,715.47 and NGN1,698.57, respectively. Conversely, Adamawa, Katsina and Sokoto States had the lowest average retail prices for Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol), at NGN1,469.83, NGN1,470.63, and NGN1,489.33, respectively. Lastly, on the Zonal profile, the South-South Zone had the highest average retail price of NGN1,623.84, while the North-West Zone had the lowest price of NGN1,564.11.

Likewise, comparing the average price value with that of the previous month (i.e., March 2026), the average retail price increased by 18.97% from NGN1,288.54. On State profile analysis, Yobe State had the highest average retail price for Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol), at NGN1,599.05. Edo and Bauchi States were next, with NGN1,595.74 and NGN1,589.07, respectively.
